Client spotlight: Aggregate Recycling UK Ltd
In our latest client spotlight, we chatted to Mike Reay, director of Aggregate Recycling UK Ltd, Lane Rental Services Ltd, and Hull Asphalt Ltd – asking him 11 key questions about what it’s like working with MPG…
Here, he also talks about the businesses he’s involved in, what to look for in an environmental consultancy partner, and what’s coming up for his firms over the next 12 months.
1) Describe your business and what it does in one paragraph:
I’m the director of three companies – Lane Rental Services Ltd, Aggregate Recycling UK Ltd, and Hull Asphalt Ltd. The first of which is a road maintenance and renewal contractor – including services such as road planning and surfacing, recycling, and fine milling – and the second which sees us running a clay quarry and landfill site, on the outskirts of York. And the third organisation manufactures tarmac products for the construction industry.
2) When did you start working with MPG?
3) Why did you reach out to the team?
We needed specialist advice and knowledge when it came to liaising with the statutory authorities, and we needed an environmental consultancy partner that could provide this experience and expertise.
4) And how did the firm help you with your project(s)?
I work with MPG across all my businesses – and in different capacities. For example, the team secured planning permission and development for the East-Yorkshire-based tarmac plant, Hull Asphalt Ltd. And regarding Aggregate Recycling UK Ltd, MPG oversees all planning and environmental reporting and compliance issues for that site.
5) Why did you choose MPG as your environmental consultancy partner of choice?
I knew they were experienced within the sector.
6) Describe what it’s like working with MPG in three words:
Helpful, positive, and professional.
7) What is one of the biggest challenges operating within the industry?
Environmental compliance and permitting is extremely important and can also be incredibly tricky to get right – as can outlining planning gain. It really helps to have a partner on board that is well-versed in how the industry works, and whose positive approach and well researched advice helps to navigate the challenges within sector easily.
8) And what is the best thing about working in the industry?
For us specifically, it’s about being efficient and good at what we do – this really matters to us. Regarding a wider view of the sector, it’s great to know that you’re playing a key part in the development of our country’s infrastructure – e.g. roads and motorways – and the extraction of valuable minerals to make this development possible.
9) When it comes to your organisation, why do clients choose you over your competitors?
Across all the organisations I oversee, our excellent communication is a real plus point. The lines of communication we employ means that customers can easily speak directly with our operations team – instead of having to talk to a call centre or somebody in an office, who’s removed from the query at hand. Also, our high-quality service and sensible market process are also points which, I believe, place us ahead of our competitors.
10) What advice would you give for businesses looking to appoint an environmental consultancy partner?
Definitely to meet them. Before you engage in their services, it’s crucial to see if you get along and whether they have the expertise you’re looking for. It’s all about fostering trust and developing a professional relationship that benefits both parties.
11) Does your company have any exciting plans in the pipeline over the next 12 months?
We’re looking to further consolidate and expand our existing operations – and that’s exciting!
